INFLUENZA
CDC: Flu Vaccine Supply Update
Dr. Julie Gerberding, Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gave a press conference on Friday, August 27, 2004, at 1:00 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time to address Chiron Corporation’s, announcement of delays in the distribution of its influenza vaccine. CDC is working closely with FDA and influenza vaccine manufacturers to carefully monitor the upcoming season’s influenza vaccine supply and this development.

2004 WNV Activity in the United States
Provides updated information on West Nile virus activity in
the United States. Eight hundred and forty three human cases have
been reported to CDC this season as ofAugust 24, 2004. Of the
843 cases, 307 were reported as West Nile meningitis or
encephalitis (neuroinvasive disease), 308 were reported as
West Nile fever (milder disease), and 228 were clinically
unspecified at this time. Twenty deaths have been reported.

CDC and the Rotary Clubs of Fort Collins, Colorado have produced and distributed an educational video and CD-ROM about West Nile virus and how individuals and communities can take action to prevent infection. This video is available to public health departments and community groups to educate people about this important public health concern and to involve communities in prevention.
