SMALLPOX

Vaccine Storage and Handling Web Course
The purpose of the Smallpox Vaccine Storage & Handling web course is to ensure that healthcare providers properly store, handle, and ship smallpox vaccine. By maintaining the cold chain, providers can be confident that the vaccine retains its potency and the expense of wasted vaccine caused by improper storage and handling practices is reduced. Available for CE credit.

SYNDROMIC SURVEILLANCE

2004 Syndromic Surveillance Conference
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has established a syndromic surveillance system that monitors emergency department visits to detect outbreaks early. The 2004 Syndromic Conference will be held on November 3-4, 2004, in Boston, MA.

CHEMICAL EXPOSURE

Upcoming live webcast: “Recognition of Illness Associated with Chemical Exposure.”
There will be a live webcast on August 5, 2004 12:00 PM – 1:00PM ET. Webcast topics will include epidemiologic clues that might suggest the covert release of a chemical agent, public health strategies for responding to the release of a chemical agent, and reporting requirements when a chemical release is suspected.

WEST NILE VIRUS (WNV)

2004 WNV Activity in the United States
Providesupdated information on West Nile virus activity in the United States. Two hundred and sixty-five human cases have been reported to CDC this season as of July 27, 2004. Of the 265 cases, 130 were reported as West Nile meningitis or encephalitis (neuroinvasive disease), 83 were reported as West Nile fever (milder disease), and 52 were clinically unspecified at this time. Six deaths have been reported.
