Salmonellosis - Outbreak Investigation, February 2007 - February 22
Public health officials in multiple states, with the assistance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are investigating a large multistate outbreak of Salmonella Tennessee infections. Pandemic Influenza

2,000 Influenza Virus Genomes Now Completed and Publicly Accessible - NIH News Release - February 21
The Influenza Genome Sequencing Project, funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), announced that it has achieved a major milestone. The entire genetic blueprints of more than 2,000 human and avian influenza viruses taken from samples around the world have been completed and the sequence data made available in a public database.

Seasonal Influenza

Recommended Composition of Influenza Virus Vaccines for Use in the 2007-2008 Northern Hemisphere Influenza Season
Because of changes in the influenza viruses now in circulation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended changing one of the three viral strains to be used in flu vaccines in the Northern Hemisphere next fall and winter. http://www.who.int/csr/disease/influenza/recommendations2007north/en/index.html

Weekly Report: Influenza Summary Update - February 23
During week 7 (February 11 - February 17, 2007), influenza activity continued to increase in the United States. Among specimens tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories for influenza, 24.8% were positive. ILI data was above baseline for the ninth week this season. Twenty-four states reported widespread influenza activity; 14 states and New York City reported regional influenza activity; 10 states and the District of Columbia reported local influenza activity; and two states reported sporadic influenza activity. The reporting of widespread or regional influenza activity increased from 33 states for week 6 to 38 states for week 7. The percent of deaths due to pneumonia and influenza remained below baseline level.
